How to Count Business Days

A business day is a calendar day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday. Counting business days matters for legal deadlines, contract terms, payroll processing, shipping estimates, and project planning. The simple rule — subtract weekends and holidays from the total calendar days — requires care around holidays that fall on weekends and the treatment of the start and end dates themselves.

How Dates Are Counted

This calculator counts the start date as day 0 (it does not include the start date in the count). The end date is included. This matches how most legal and business contexts count days. For example, a contract signed on Monday with a "5 business day" review period expires the following Monday (Tuesday through Monday = 5 business days, with the signing day being day 0).

If your specific use case counts differently — for instance, some shipping carriers include the dispatch day — adjust by adding or subtracting one day from the result.

Common Business Day Calculations

Legal notices: Many US laws require advance notice in business days. For example, a 30-day statutory notice period for lease termination in many states means 30 calendar days, but some tenant-protection laws specify business days. Always confirm the exact language.

Banking and finance: The Uniform Commercial Code and Federal Reserve regulations define "business day" as any day except Saturday, Sunday, and federal holidays. ACH transfers typically settle in 1–3 business days; wire transfers on the same business day if initiated before the cut-off time.

Shipping and delivery: Carrier services such as FedEx, UPS, and USPS Priority Mail Express count business days excluding Sundays and major holidays. Standard ground shipping typically excludes Saturdays and all federal holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a working day in the US?

A working day (also called a business day) is any day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or federal public holiday. In practice, individual employers may observe additional company holidays, floating holidays, or regional days off that this calculator does not include. The US federal government recognizes 11 public holidays per year, which are listed in the calculator.

How does the calculator handle public holidays that fall on weekends?

When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, the government observes it on the preceding Friday. When it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. This calculator counts the official observance date as the holiday, not the calendar date, to match how most US employers handle holiday pay.

How many working days are in a year?

A standard US calendar year has 260 to 262 working days before public holidays (52 weeks × 5 weekdays). Subtracting the 11 federal public holidays — accounting for weekend adjustments — leaves approximately 249 to 251 net working days per year. In 2025 the count is 251 working days; in 2026 it is 251 working days.

How do I calculate a contract deadline that says "30 business days"?

Use Section B of this calculator. Enter the contract start date, type 30 in the "working days to add" field, and check the holidays checkbox. The result is the date exactly 30 business days later, skipping all weekends and US public holidays. Note that legal deadlines in some jurisdictions use calendar days, not business days — always check your contract language.

What is the difference between a working day and a business day?

The terms are used interchangeably in most US contexts. Both refer to Monday through Friday excluding public holidays. In international contracts, "business day" may be qualified by a specific jurisdiction — for example, "London business days" or "New York business days" — which matters when different countries have different holidays. This calculator uses US federal holidays only.
