Mulch Calculator — How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Enter dimensions for each garden bed to find the total mulch needed in cubic yards and bags. Supports multiple beds with different depths.

Garden Beds
Bed 1:= 10.00 cu ft
Total volume: 0.37 cubic yards (10.00 cubic feet)
Bags needed (2 cu ft bags): 5 bags (cost: $25)
Bags needed (3 cu ft bags): 4 bags
Bulk mulch: 0.37 cu yd ≈ $11–$15 (at $30–40/yd delivered)
Formula: Volume (cu ft) = Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 12) Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27 ──────────────────────────────────────── Bed 1 = 10 × 4 × (3/12) = 10.00 cu ft ──────────────────────────────────────── Total = 10.00 cu ft = 0.37 cu yd 2 cu ft bags = 10.00 ÷ 2 = 5 bags × $5 = $25 3 cu ft bags = 10.00 ÷ 3 = 4 bags

How to Calculate Mulch

Mulch volume is calculated in cubic feet, then converted to cubic yards for bulk ordering or bags for retail purchase.

Mulch Formula

Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27
2 cu ft bags   = ceil(Volume cu ft ÷ 2)
3 cu ft bags   = ceil(Volume cu ft ÷ 3)

Example: Two beds — 8×12 at 3" deep and 4×20 at 2" deep:

Bed 1 = 8 × 12 × (3/12) = 96 × 0.25 = 24.0 cu ft = 0.89 cu yd
Bed 2 = 4 × 20 × (2/12) = 80 × 0.167 = 13.3 cu ft = 0.49 cu yd
Total = 37.3 cu ft = 1.38 cu yd
2 cu ft bags = ceil(37.3 ÷ 2) = 19 bags  ($95 at $5/bag)
3 cu ft bags = ceil(37.3 ÷ 3) = 13 bags
Bulk = 1.38 cu yd ≈ $41–$55 delivered

Benefits of Mulching

Properly applied mulch provides multiple benefits:

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubic yards of mulch do I need for a 10×20 bed at 3 inches deep?

Volume = 10 × 20 × (3/12) ÷ 27 = 10 × 20 × 0.25 ÷ 27 = 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards. In 2 cu ft bags: 50 cu ft ÷ 2 = 25 bags. In 3 cu ft bags: ceil(50 ÷ 3) = 17 bags. Bulk delivery at 1.85 cubic yards is more economical than bagged for areas this large.

How deep should mulch be applied?

The standard recommendation is 2–4 inches. Less than 2 inches provides insufficient weed suppression and moisture retention. More than 4 inches can prevent water penetration, create anaerobic conditions that harm roots, and encourage fungal diseases. Keep mulch at least 2 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks — 'mulch volcanoes' around trees are a common mistake that causes trunk rot and bark decay.

How much does mulch cost?

Bagged mulch: $4–$7 per 2 cubic foot bag at retail. Bulk mulch: $25–$50 per cubic yard for standard shredded wood, delivered. Premium types (dyed, cedar, cypress) run $40–$80/yard delivered. For volumes over 3 cubic yards, bulk delivery is almost always cheaper than bagged. Some municipalities offer free wood chip mulch from tree-trimming operations.

Which type of mulch is best?

Shredded hardwood bark: most popular, stays in place well, decomposes slowly, improves soil over time. Pine bark nuggets: acidic, good for acid-loving plants (azaleas, blueberries), tends to float in heavy rain. Cedar or cypress: natural insect-repelling oils, longer lasting, higher cost. Straw: good for vegetable gardens, decomposes in one season. Rubber mulch: does not decompose, no weed suppression benefit, gets hot in summer — not recommended near edibles.

How often should mulch be replenished?

Shredded wood mulch decomposes and compacts to about half its original depth within 12–18 months. Most landscapes need refreshing every year or two. Before adding new mulch, check existing depth — if 2+ inches remain, just fluff the existing layer rather than adding more. Remove old mulch that has turned completely to soil and integrated into the ground, as it can harbor fungal pathogens if left to build up.
